Trustee Job Description
Background to The Sunninghill Trust (“the Trust”)
The Trust is an unincorporated grant-giving charity registered with the Charity Commission which was founded in 1817 following an inclosure award made under the Windsor Forest Inclosure Act 1813. It is currently regulated by a Scheme of the Charity Commissioners dated September 1980.
The objects of the Trust, as defined in its founding document, primarily include the relief of poverty among the inhabitants of the local parish, along with the maintenance of the land originally set aside.
The Scheme provides for a body of five Trustees: one Ex-officio Trustee, two Nominative Trustees and two Co-optative Trustees.
The Ex-officio Trustee is the Vicar of the Ecclesiastical Parish of St Michael and All Angels, Sunninghill.
The Nominative Trustees are appointed by Sunninghill & Ascot Parish Council, the term of each appointment being four years.
The Co-optative Trustees are appointed by the existing Trustee body and they are drawn from the local community. The term of office for a Co-optative Trustee is five years.
Main Duties and Responsibilities of all Trustees
- To ensure that the Trust complies with its governing document, charity law, and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
- To ensure that the Trust pursues its objects as defined in its governing document. The objects of the charity, besides the ongoing management of the land, are primarily to apply the income from the permanently endowed funds to relieving poverty among the inhabitants of the Parish of Sunninghill and South Ascot. Subject to that, funds can then be applied for a) relief of old age and sickness, b) providing sporting and recreational facilities in support of social welfare, c) providing and supporting educational facilities, and finally d) any other charitable purpose deemed appropriate.
- To manage the Trust’s resources effectively so as to ensure its ongoing financial stability. In doing this, ensure the Trust applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects, and that money spent does not replace what otherwise would have been provided by the public purse.
- To protect and manage the property of the Trust and to ensure the appropriate investment
- of the Trust’s funds.
- To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the Trust.
- To give sufficient time to the Trust to ensure trustee responsibilities are carried out effectively. This will include contributing actively by attending trustee meeting, helping in the assessment of grant applications, liaising with volunteers and assisting in collaboration activities in the community.
- To safeguard the good name and reputation of the Trust as all times.
- Ensuring that the Trust’s governance is of the highest possible standard, by acting in
- the charity’s best interests at all times.
- Trustees should make full use of any specific skills, knowledge, or experience to help the board make good decisions.
- To adhere to all The Trust’s Policies and Procedures, including maintaining confidentiality of information in line with GDPR regulations.

Person Specification
A value-driven person with close connections to the parish of Sunninghill and South Ascot who wants to make a difference in the local community.
Terms of appointment
- This is a voluntary position without remuneration.
- Co-optative Trustees are appointed by the existing Trustee body (as vacancies occur), and they are drawn from the local community. The term of office for a Co-optative Trustee is five years.
- The time commitment includes attending 4 Board meetings annually, alongside time to be set aside at irregular intervals to help with the assessment of grant applications, attendance at community events, and liaising with volunteers or contractors within the community.
